eBay Fee Calculator UK

On eBay UK, private sellers pay no selling fee on most items: the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on top instead. Business sellers pay a final value fee by category on the item and postage (12.9% for “Everything Else”), a £0.30 or £0.40 per-order fee and a 0.35% regulatory operating fee.

Every change we record is on the fee changes page. How we work each fee out: how we calculate.

Is selling on eBay UK free?

For most private sellers living in the UK, yes. eBay charges a private seller no final value fee on most items, so a £40 sale with £4 postage leaves you the whole £44. You get 300 free listings a month; each listing after that costs £0.35.

Three things can still cost you money: an international fee of 3% on the price and postage when the item goes abroad, a currency conversion charge of 2.5% (2.75% from 1 December 2026) when eBay converts a sale from another currency, and the listing fee once your free listings run out. eBay’s private-seller page says its fees include VAT at 20%. Cars, motorcycles and other vehicles are not free to sell.

What does the buyer pay on a private seller’s item?

A Buyer Protection fee, added to the item price at checkout. It is £0.10 plus 7% of the first £20 of the price, 4% of the part from £20 to £300, and 2% of the part from £300 to £4,000.

On a £40 item: £0.10 + £1.40 + £0.80 = £2.30, so the buyer pays £42.30 before postage. None of it comes out of your money, but the buyer sees the total, so keep it in mind when you set your price.

What do business sellers pay on eBay UK?

A final value fee on the item price and postage, at the rate for the item’s category. A few examples from eBay’s business table: clothes, shoes and accessories 11.9%; books, comics and magazines 9.9%; mobile and smart phones 6.9% up to £1,000 per item; 3% above £1,000; jewellery and watches 14.9% up to £1,000 per item; 4% above £1,000. On top come a per-order fee of £0.30 for orders of £10 or less (£0.40 above) and a regulatory operating fee of 0.35% of the price and postage.

Say you sell a £40 jumper with £4 postage. The fees come to £5.79 and you receive £38.21. Top-rated sellers who offer Premium Service get 10% off the percentage part. eBay’s business fee page shows every fee without VAT; tick “Add VAT to eBay’s fees” in the calculator if you cannot reclaim it (eBay’s private-seller page gives the rate, 20%).

What does it cost to sell abroad from the UK?

A private seller pays 3% of the price and postage on any sale delivered outside the UK: on a £40 item with £10 postage that is £1.50. A business seller pays by where the buyer is: 1.05% for the Eurozone and Northern Europe, 1.8% for the US and Canada, and 2% for everywhere else, on top of the category fee.

If the buyer pays in another currency and eBay converts it, a conversion charge of 2.5% (2.75% from 1 December 2026) applies. Tick “eBay converts the currency” in the calculator to include it.

Should a business seller pay for an eBay Shop?

A Shop costs £27 a month (Basic), £77 (Featured) or £437 (Anchor), before VAT. It does not lower the final value fee: eBay’s business table is the same for every business seller, with a Shop or without. What a Shop changes is listing. You get more free listings each month, and after those a fixed price listing costs £0.10 with Basic, £0.05 with Featured and nothing with Anchor, against £0.30 with no Shop. So a Shop pays when you list a lot.

Choose your Shop in the calculator. It shows the monthly price under the result, apart from the sale, and uses that Shop’s listing fee when you tick “over your free listings”. Count the monthly price against a month’s sales, not one item.

What this calculator leaves out

eBay fee questions

How much does eBay take from a £100 sale in the UK?

As a private seller, nothing on most items: you keep £100, and the buyer pays a £4.70 Buyer Protection fee on top. As a business seller in “Everything Else”, with no postage, eBay takes £13.65 (before VAT), so you keep £86.35.

Do private sellers pay eBay fees on postage?

No. With no final value fee there is no fee on postage either. The one exception is a sale abroad: the 3% international fee is worked out on the price and the postage.

Do I pay VAT on eBay fees?

eBay’s private-seller fees already include VAT at 20%. Its business fee page shows fees without VAT, and so does the calculator until you tick “Add VAT to eBay’s fees”. Tick it if you cannot reclaim VAT: on a £100 sale in “Everything Else” the fees go from £13.65 to £16.38. This is not tax advice.

How many free listings do I get on eBay UK?

Private sellers get 300 a month, then pay £0.35 a listing. Business sellers without a Shop pay £0.30 for each listing over their allowance; with a Shop, a fixed price listing over it costs £0.10 (Basic), £0.05 (Featured) or nothing (Anchor). Tick “over your free listings” in the calculator to add it.

Is this the same calculator as the main eBay one?

Yes: the same calculator and the same fees, opening on the UK with a guide for UK sellers. The main eBay fee calculator opens on the US.
