Why can a dearer handbag cost less in fees?
Because the lower rate is for the whole sale, not just the part above the line. A bag that sells for exactly $2,000 pays $300.40. At $2,000.01 the fee drops to $180.40, and you receive $120.01 more. There is no price between $2,000 and the next cent that helps you, so if a bag is worth about $2,000, price it a little over.
Does postage count toward the $2,000?
Yes. eBay looks at the total amount of the sale, and in the US that includes the postage the buyer pays and the sales tax. A $1,900 bag with $40 postage and 7% tax is a $2,075.80 sale, so it gets the 9% rate: $187.22 in fees. The same bag with free postage and no tax would pay $285.40.
What do UK business sellers pay on handbags?
eBay UK splits the price instead: 12.9% on the first £800 of a bag and 7% on the rest, plus the per-order fee and the 0.35% regulatory fee. A £1,500 bag pays £157.85. There is no sudden drop, so pricing just over a line does not help in the UK.
