What happens to the fee at $5,000?
It drops for the whole sale. A piece that sells for exactly $5,000 pays $750.40; at $5,000.01 it pays $450.40. That one cent leaves you $300.01 more. Like the handbag rule, the line is on the total sale, so postage and sales tax can carry a piece over it.
Is jewelry dearer to sell than other items?
Up to $5,000, yes: 15% against the 13.6% most items pay. A $300 ring pays $45.40, while a $300 item in most categories pays $41.20. Above $5,000 jewelry pays less than most items: $810.40 on a $9,000 piece against $1,055.65.
