How do eBay fees work in the US?

When an item sells, eBay charges a final value fee: a percentage of the total amount of the sale. That total is the item price plus the postage your buyer pays plus the sales tax eBay collects. For most categories it is 13.6% on the first $7,500 of each item and 2.35% on anything above. On top comes a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 above that.

Some categories have their own rule. Books, films and music: 15.3% up to $7,500; 2.35% over $7,500. Guitars and basses: 6.7% up to $7,500; 2.35% over $7,500; insertion free. Athletic shoes: 8% if sale is $150 or more, and NO per-order fee; 13.6% if under $150. Pick the category in the calculator and it uses the right rule.

Why does sales tax change my eBay fee?

Because eBay charges its percentage on the tax it collects for the state. Take a $100 item with $10 postage to a buyer paying 8% sales tax. The buyer pays $118.80, so the final value fee is worked out on $118.80, not $110. The fees come to $16.56 and you receive $93.44. Put your buyer’s tax rate in the calculator; if you sell all over the country, an average rate is a fair guess.

How do eBay UK fees work?

Private sellers living in the UK pay no final value fee on most items. Instead the buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee on top of the price: £0.10 plus 7% of the first £20, 4% from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,000. It does not come out of your money. If you post the item abroad, you pay an international fee of 3%.

Business sellers pay a final value fee by category (from 9.9% to 12.9% in most, some with a lower rate above a set price), a per-order fee of £0.30 or £0.40, and a regulatory operating fee of 0.35%. eBay’s business fee page shows these fees without VAT.

What changes are coming?

eBay’s currency conversion charge, paid when eBay converts a sale into your currency, is 3% (3.25% from 14 October 2026) for US sellers and 2.5% (2.75% from 1 December 2026) for UK sellers. The calculator uses the right rate for the day you open it. Every change we record is on our fee changes page.

What this calculator leaves out

eBay fee questions

How much does eBay take from a $100 sale?

With no postage or sales tax, in most categories: 13.6% of $100 is $13.60, plus the $0.40 per-order fee, so $14.00 in all. You keep $86.00. Postage and sales tax raise the fee, because eBay charges on them too.

Does eBay charge fees on shipping?

Yes. In the US and for UK business sellers, the final value fee is charged on the postage the buyer pays as well as the item price. In the US it is also charged on sales tax.

Is it free to sell on eBay UK?

For UK private sellers, yes, on most items: no final value fee. The buyer pays a Buyer Protection fee instead (on a £100 item it is £4.70). Business sellers still pay fees, and so do private sellers posting abroad (3%).

What is the eBay per-order fee?

A flat charge on every order: $0.30 for orders of $10 or less and $0.40 for orders over $10 in the US. UK business sellers pay £0.30 or £0.40.

Does eBay charge a fee to list?

US sellers get 250 free listings a month, then pay $0.35 a listing. UK private sellers get 300 free, then pay £0.35. Tick the box in the calculator if you are over your allowance.

What does this calculator leave out?

The Below Standard surcharge (only for sellers eBay rates poorly), eBay Store subscriptions, optional listing upgrades and vehicle listings, which have their own fees.
